In 1970 I had my twenty first birthday camped on the beach in southern Morocco. I had hitched rides across Europe down to Sicily then by boat across to Tunisia. I then traveled across north Africa to Morocco. I had a great time it was an eye opener being in Africa and I really enjoyed the hospitality of the Moroccan people.

The Klondike Visitors Association has sent out an email announcing this years Authors on Eighth Writing Contest. There are two categories, poetry and prose, and submissions should not be more than 2500 words. I've won this twice in the past. I'm sure the generosity of the judges had something to do with it because there are some very talented submissions. If I don't win that's okay because it is a great contest and I'm pleased to enter it.
The theme this year is 'Dawson City Ghost Stories'. I'm not big on ghost stories but I did write a scary (hardly) wolf/bear, vampire sucking eye balls and blood story that was published in Haines Junction. I wrote this only for Wendy who loves all the vampire books and movies. I can't stand them they scare the hell out of me. I've written 1000 words so far about a beautiful bored dancer at the Moulin Rouge in Paris who leaves for adventure in the Klondike gold rush. She buys the Palace Grand Theater from Arizona Charlie Meadows and the story gets spooky because she brings a ghost with her. I was going to have Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec chase her but he died in 1901 so the timing is off with the gold rush. (see with fiction you can write anything you want) I'm also 12000 words into a novella (the last of three for a book) about a town called Evermore situated in northern England. For two hundred years the Tarr family and a business, making world famous bake brown beans, dominates life in the village. A huge catastrophic event quickly and dramatically changes things for everyone. The story then follows the life of a Herschel Tarr who was the heir to the village and business. He falls from being a prince to a wandering lost soul who eventually after much trial (Russian prison, India prison) finds his way and purpose in life. I have to go up to Ross River to look at some work. Here is a picture I took last year just outside of the town. |
